Different Names for Sunglasses

From America to Australia: Popular nicknames for sunglasses

Whether they are used as eye protection or just to make a fashion statement, over the years sunglasses have developed many different nicknames. Not surprisingly, the nickname of choice varies by location.

In the United States

For the most part, sunglasses are called just that in the United States. However, there are a few other terms that are commonly used. These include shades, specs, and sunshades. Although not as popular, hater blockers, locs, and stunna shades are a few other nicknames that might be used among certain crowds.

The style or person most associated with the style also has influenced some of the nicknames used. One example of this is the large sunglasses that are popular with women today being referred to as Onassis glasses because they resemble the pair often worn by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Another example of this is mirrored aviator sunglasses being referred to as cop shades simply because this particular style is most commonly associated with police officers.

Different countries, different names

Different cultures and people mean different nicknames. Here are just a couple examples.

Spekkies: Commonly used in southern Australia.
Sunnies: A nickname for sunglasses used in both Australia and New Zealand.
Glares and Coolers: In India, the term glares is used for dark sunglasses and coolers is used for light ones.

A name is just name

Regardless of what they are called, sunglasses can provide just the protection from harmful rays the human eye needs or add the perfect touch to an outfit. With so many different styles, colors, and protection levels available, finding the right pair for your needs has never been easier.
